Robotic Surgery Q & A
What is robotic surgery?
Also called robotic-assisted surgery, this is an innovative surgical method that allows Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology’s surgeons more accuracy, while simultaneously minimizing the invasiveness of the procedure.
During robotic surgery, our surgeons access the surgery site through a small incision or a series of small incisions. The robotic components of the surgical device go through those incisions to perform your procedure while your surgeon’s hands remain outside your body. Instead, your surgeon controls the robotic instruments through a console that translates their hand movements to the surgical instruments.
All of this allows your surgeon to perform your surgery with more precision through very few, extremely small incisions.
What are the benefits of robotic surgery?
Not only do the robotic surgical instruments give your surgeon more control and precision, but this type of surgery has another notable benefit. Because it can be performed through such small incisions, the impact on your body is minimized. This shrinks your blood loss and risk for complications. It also means you spend less time healing and experience less pain throughout your healing process. In fact, Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology uses enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols to help you heal better and faster. And, on top of all of that, with robotic surgery, you’re left with little to no scarring.
To bring these benefits to the widest range of patients, the robotic surgeons at Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology are partnering with St. Peter’s Hospital to develop a Minimally Invasive Center of Excellence.
What types of robotic surgery are available?
Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology can perform virtually any gynecological surgery robotically. Specifically, some of the procedures we most commonly use robotic surgery for include:
- The removal of uterine fibroids (myomectomies),
- The removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)
- The removal of ovarian cysts (cystectomy)
